Description

This article draws findings related to writing accountability from a qualitative study on graduate writing consultants' experiences as writers and in consulting. The goal is to explore their perspectives on writing based on their personal experiences as academic writers, training as writing consultants, and reflection on working with writers. In this article, firstly, I present an overview of current literature on accountability and identifies the gap. Recent research on accountability has focused on writing groups for faculty and graduate student writers. However, the notion of accountability has not yet been explored. Plus, there has not been much discussion on the role of writing consultation in building accountability. Second, I introduce the methodology to establish the rigor of the study. With six participants, I conducted two rounds of interviews and session observations over three months in Spring 2021. Next, I present accountability building practices from interviews with my participants. I then connect those practices with the features of writing consultation and propose that writing consultation can be a viable way to enhance accountability in the writing process.
