Description
In the academic year 2013-2014, I was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Dobrich, Bulgaria. The experience refined my writing voice and prompted my entrance into graduate school. Bulgaria was, as religious literature would call it, a "desert experience." Bulgaria was simultaneously magical and desolate. A reflective and landscape-attentive voice emerged on the page to grapple with this paradox. I wrote a creative nonfiction thesis that engaged my personal experience of eastern European culture. The thesis is a collection of stand-alone essays that use various modes of essay structure, tone, and subject matter to get at the complex impact my experience in Bulgaria had on my life.
