Description
Fruits of saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) provide crucial, high-quality resources to wildlife while providing a matrix for many southeastern US ecosystems. As a foundation species, saw palmetto plays a major role in structuring fire-maintained plant communities. Often living on nutrient-poor soil conditions, the thick leaves of saw palmetto are long lived, up to 2.8 years in shaded sand pine scrub.
