Description
Engaging students in undergraduate research is recognized as a high-impact practice (AAC&U) and has been shown to increase student retention in all disciplines (Lopatto, 2006). In this colloquium, we will share some benefits of engaging undergraduate students in research and highlight the importance of mentoring in programs designed to encourage student persistence. We will use, as our case study, the outcomes from the STEM Scholars Program, a cohort-based pre-matriculation undergraduate research program that launched at Bucknell in 2014 and has served over 125 students. This program was designed to recruit and retain students from groups underrepresented in STEM disciplines (students of color, Pell-eligible, 1st generation, and female-identifying in some disciplines) and to encourage academic and professional access and success. We include text and video-recorded stories from past and current STEM scholars and faculty mentors.
