Description
The Nile, a theama kainon, winds its convoluted path through Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Clitophon, defying characterization. So too do the novel’s natural history descriptions. This paper examines how the internal and external signification of these natural histories constructs and deconstructs meaning, perhaps even subtly alluding to the emperor Hadrian.
