Abstract

Deeds for Haven’s Needs partnered with Haven Ministry Center to perform our service project. Haven Ministry Center of Sunbury, PA is a non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, food, and life skill education to homeless individuals and families in the Susquehanna Valley area. Executive director of 10 years, Christy Zeigler, is planning a renovation to double their occupancy in the near future, and our service project was instrumental in laying a well organized foundation for their expansion. Our company spent three Sundays organizing the food pantry and the storage room, re-mulching the playground and cleaning the playground equipment, and painting the hallway walls. Our partnership was made even more special by the impressive achievement that Haven Ministry Center reached this year: 30 years of service. To commemorate this milestone, Deeds for Haven’s Needs hosted a celebration where company members bonded with residents while enjoying the music generously performed by Beyond Unison, a Bucknell a cappella group. A week prior to this event, company members hosted a barbecue to introduce ourselves to and begin developing meaningful connections with the residents. To raise money for Haven Ministry Center, we hosted a fundraiser bowling tournament at Imperial Lanes. The “Strike out Homelessness” tournament attracted many Bucknell students, and the exciting night ended with the highest scorer winning a Bucknell Bison bowling ball. This fundraiser was made possible by the generosity of our sponsors — The Cookie Dude, Pizza Phi and Imperial Lanes — and it generated about $800 for Haven Ministry Center. We also carried out fundraising efforts through GiveButter, and our site was featured on the GiveButter discover page described as a “Campaign We Love.” The GiveButter received upwards of $3300 in donations. To fund our company’s expenses, Deeds for Haven’s Needs created a “let the good times roll” hoodie. The product was a hit on campus and we sold all 200 hoodies in our inventory within five days. The profit covered all company expenses, and just over $1300 was left over to donate to Haven Ministry Center. In total, Deeds For Haven's Needs contributed roughly $5500 to Haven Ministry Center.
