During the summer of 2015 Professor Tlusty received a Mellon Summer Research Grant to georectify and identify locations of over 100 inns and taverns in Augsburg, Germany. The work begun by Dylan Davies and continued by Polly Englot is part of a much larger text analysis and visualization project that Professor Tlusty has been working on with colleagues in the U.S. and Europe. Englot’s annotations are helping Tlusty to analyze how the network of taverns in the city may have been associated with legal permissions granted to Jews traveling in and out of the city. Englot presented the work in progress at the Kalman Symposium in spring 2016. One of the benefits of working with the Kilian map is that Augsburg’s urban footprint still closely relates to the 16th century view; many of the buildings drawn in the map are still standing – and some of them are still in use as taverns. Annotating the map helps to discern how locations of different types of drinking establishments relate to civic and religious buildings. The image below shows a non-georectified version of the map.
